Alabama Psychiatry & Counseling greatly values our patients and the families that love them. The professional staff at Alabama Psychiatry & Counseling is part of a patient care team whose members work closely together to help all patients meet their treatment goals.

Every Alabama Psychiatry & Counseling physician and staff member will strive to make your experience with us as comfortable and pleasant as possible. If patients or family members have any questions and/or comments about our facility or treatment they are encouraged to contact a member of the staff with assurance that any patient or family concern will be handled with sensitivity and in confidence.

In order to ensure that your visit is as swift as possible, please feel free to print and complete any of the following forms applicable to your visit. Arriving with all necessary paperwork greatly assists our staff in creating and updating your file while limiting your overall wait time.

General Information

  • Please note that the following information represents answers to the most common questions about the practice, but is not intended as a comprehensive list of our policies and procedures.
  • The office is generally open from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.  However, individual clinicians' schedules do vary, and some may offer early or late appointments.

  • The office will be closed to observe major holidays.

Scheduling Information for New Patients

  • Please call our scheduling coordinator at (205) 440-6292 to schedule an appointment as a new patient.
  • Please be aware that not all clinicians may be accepting new patients.
  • If the patient is a minor (under 18), both the child and a parent/guardian must be present for the initial evaluation appointment.
  • Please bring any prior records or reports that you think may be helpful to your clinician to your initial appointment, especially any psychological/educational evaluations.
  • Please arrive approximately 30 minutes prior to your scheduled initial appointment and check in at the front desk in order to complete new patient paperwork. You may print out these forms below, fill them out, and bring them to your initial appointment to expedite the process.  If you do complete the paperwork beforehand, you need only arrive 15 minutes early to your first appointment.

Insurance Information for New Patients

  • Alabama Psychiatry & Counseling is in network with many of the major insurers in the region.  You will need to check with our scheduling coordinator to confirm that we are in network with your insurer.
  • Even if you believe that Alabama Psychiatry & Counseling is in network with your insurer, we recommend that you call your insurer to confirm this and to "pre-authorize" your treatment prior to arriving for your first appointment.

Scheduling Information for Established Patients

  • Please call our scheduling coordinator at (205) 440-6292 to schedule an appointment as an established patient.
  • Please arrive at least 5 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment and check in at the front desk.  If you need to update any insurance or demographic (address, phone number, etc.) information, please arrive at least 10 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment.
  • Follow up appointments with an M.D. or Nurse Practitioner are generally scheduled for 15-20 minutes, longer as necessary.
  • Follow up appointments with a Psychologist or Therapist are generally scheduled for 45-60 minutes.
  • If the patient is a minor (under 18) they must be present for the appointment.  If you wish to schedule a parent or family-only session, please discuss it with your clinician.
  • Please call at least 24 hours prior if you need to cancel an appointment. Missed appointments and late cancellations are subject to charges.
  • Please note that if you arrive late for your appointment, you may be asked to reschedule.

What is a psychiatrist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor with specialized training in diagnosing and treating emotional problems and mental illness including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, psychosis, ADHD, behavioral problems and substance abuse. Psychiatrists also threat individuals with self-destructive or violent impulses.

Do psychiatrists only treat serious conditions?

No. Psychiatrists evaluate and treat individuals with a wide range of difficulties. This is true for those who seek out treatment themselves and those who are referred by others.

Do you accept my insurance?

Alabama psychiatry and counseling accepts most commercial insurance plans as well as Medicare. Insurance policies vary greatly in what mental health services will be covered and what co-payments are required under your insurance plan. Once your appointment has been scheduled, our administrative support staff will offer assistance is determining your insurance coverage. We also encourage you to call your insurance company prior to your scheduled appointment to determine coverage and co-payments. You co-payment and any deductibles and balances, which may apply, will be collected when you check-in. Alabama psychiatry and counseling accepts cash, debit and major credit cards. Balances and payment arrangements are the patient's responsibility and should be treated as a personal commitment.

You may call (205) 440-6292 and leave a message for you for provider. You may also access your provider via the patient portal. Once you are an established patient, an invitation will be sent to your email so that you may be set up a username and login to the patient portal.

How do I request a medication refill?

You may call to (205) 440-6292 to request medication refills. You may also make such a request via the patient portal.

Is what I tell you confidential?

Basically, yes. Alabama Psychiatry and Counseling follows all professional standards, state and federal laws to protect your personal information.

I need my medical records transferred to another provider what do I do?

Please contact (205) 440-6292 to request a release of information form. You may also download the release of information form from our website. Please complete and sign this form and bring it to our office or fax at (205) 313-3177. You may also ask your other provider to provide you with the release which can be sent to our office via fax at (205) 313-3177.

What if I am currently experiencing an emergency?

Please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room, if you or your loved one is experiencing a life-threatening condition or is in immediate danger.
